One Million Copies of OS X Lion Bought!

Just under 48 hours ago, Apple released their new Operating System called OS X Lion.  With in that 48 hour time period, Apple announced that they sold more than 1 million copies of the amazing new Operating System.  This is crazy because they were all sold and downloaded with the Mac App Store.  What will happen when they release it to stores for the public because some users don’t have the Mac App Store!

A little quote from Apple’s Marketing Chief Phil Schiller:

Lion is off to a great start, user reviews and industry reaction have been fantastic. Lion is a huge step forward, it’s not only packed with innovative features but it’s incredibly easy for users to update their Macs to the best OS we’ve ever made.

At 3.7GB per download, you would be crazy not to purchase OS X Lion.  The download size is fast, not to mention the great price point!  If you haven’t downloaded OS X Lion yet, help Apple out and do so!

Great job Apple!  Keep up the great work!

Apple Updates Their LED Cinema Display

A few posts ago, I talked about the LED Cinema Display and now I’m finally happy to announce that Apple updated it completely. When I mean completely, I really only mean one thing, thunderbolt!

Apple has chose to call their new display the Thunderbolt Display and they have all right to do so. Since Apple came out with Thunderbolt and it’s their own thing, Thunderbolt Display fits perfect! Not only that, you can only hook it up to a 2011, updated Mac, which ONLY has a Thunderbolt Port. If you are using an older version of the Mac, you won’t be able to get this display to work. It’s Thunderbolt only!

Pricing is at a respectable amount of $999 for a 27 inch monitor. For the quality of the display, this price is actually reasonable.

You might be thinking, why is Thunderbolt such a huge deal? Thunderbolt compatible is a huge deal because it’s extremely fast for transferring data. Let’s put it this way, you all know for that USB 3.0 is fast, imagine Thunderbolt being twice as fast as USB 3.0. Actually, you don’t have to imagine, it’s true! In conclusion, Thunderbolt allows you to transfer data extremely fast.

Do you think that Apple will be planning to release Thunderbolt compatible Time Capsules later this year? Things are still thrown up in the air with Thunderbolt. All I know is that Apple is really trying to push Thunderbolt.

Mac OS X Lion now Available!

As of this morning, July 20, 2011, Mac OS X Lion is released for download in the Mac App Store for an upgrade of just $29.99. If you don’t upgrade for such a cheap price, then you’re crazy!

Apple is claiming this upgrade to be the easiest upgrade to day and it’s only 4GB. That’s about the size of an HD movie from the iTunes Store. Users who don’t have broadband internet access at home, work or school can download Lion at an Apple retail store. Apple is also claiming that a USB thumb drive with Lion will be available later in August. That’s great to hear. The only problem, it’s a bit more expensive at $69.99. Still, it’s very cheap to upgrade a complete OS!

If you haven’t already done so, go purchase the upgrade and enjoy this new revolution of Mac.

Will OS X Lion be released tomorrow?

According to all speculations, many have believed that OS X Lion will be released tomorrow, July 20th. We may have finally got the confirmation that we have all wanted.

During today’s Q3 earnings call, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer disclosed that OS X Lion will be released tomorrow in the Mac App Store. It caught a few people off guard because it was in his opening statement. Not many people would announce something that big in the opening statement.

A few third-party retailers around the world, including Apple’s own retail stores, have received hard drives containing the amazing OS X Lion so that they can update their own machines.

If Peter Oppenheimer is correct, are you excited for the release of OS X Lion tomorrow? If you don’t own a Mac, will you be purchasing one so you can use OS X Lion? Leave your comments!

Spotify iPhone App Goes Live in the US

It’s officially confirmed that Spotify will be launching in the United States today, July 14th. As a matter of fact, I’m a few hours late in writing this blog post. Spotify is officially released in the US and a lot of people have negative and positive reviews. At this point in time, Spotify is invite only. They have released their official iPhone App in the United States but there’s no iPad counterpart. It works just like you’d expect it to. The good news is, the app if free!

There is a slight catch with the app since Spotify isn’t free. You will need the $9.99/month premium service in order to physically use this application. It’s a shame, but then again, it’s not a free service. There are currently two plays available for Spotify, one for $4.99/month and one for $9.99/month. The catch is that you can’t use the mobile application on the cheaper plan. If you didn’t get the chance to sign up for the beta invites, sit tight! I’m sure another round will be released soon!

OS X Lion “ready” applications begin appearing in the Mac App Store

WordCrasher OS X Lion ApplicationMany of the rumors appear that today was going to be the launch of OS X Lion. Although many have been disappointed that nothing has been released, don’t lose hope just yet. It’s still Thursday and the day isn’t over. Although things don’t look likely, it’s still a possibility.

A big thing that has caught a bunch of Mac Users off guard is the face that Apple has begun to approve applications in the Mac App Store. Is this normal to include applications that won’t even run on an older operating system?

What do you think about this? Is this a sign that OS X Lion will be appearing VERY soon? Are you excited for the new release? Leave all your thoughts in the comment section.

7 day return policy on Apps in Taiwan?

It appears that the Economic Times of India is reporting that Apple changed its return policy on Apps from minutes to 7 days. In simple words, you may now get a 7 day trial period for any iOS App in Taiwan. This has not been made official nor is there any official word, but wouldn’t this be interesting. Taiwan gave both Apple and Google two weeks to comply with its consumer protection mandate.

An official said the lack of a return and refund mechanism violated the Consumer Protection Act. In an example of the problem the city government is trying to prevent, Yeh cited a case of software bought on Apple Store on Thursday that did not work, but left the buyer without recourse.

It seems to be that Apple has complied with the consumer protection mandate but Google seems to be waiting it out:

Taiwan’s consumer protection law stipulates that consumers are entitled to a seven-day trial period after purchasing any products via Internet, including cell phone software applications. The capital city’s government found that Google and Apple had violated the law and on June 8 ordered them to alter their trading rules. “Google refused to change its rules,” Betty Chen, the head of a consumer protection at the city government, said. Apple changed its rules.

This would be extremely nice if this could be true to Taiwanese users, but is it logical? If a user purchases an application and they don’t like it, they will just return it. In return, the developer will lose money and be upset. Not only is money an issue, but a developer may be a little discouraged because it might show that their Apps aren’t “phenomenal” and they may stop creating.

Do you think this is a logical thing to do? Explain any reasoning you have in the comment section.

Twitter Officially Bought TweetDeck

A few weeks back, I posted an article about the possibility of Twitter acquiring TweetDeck. I’m here to let you all know that this deal has finally gone through.

TweetDeck is an application for organizing the display of Tweets and the ability to post Tweets straight from your desktop. For months now, TweetDeck has been in the eyes of Twitter. The deal was finally signed for on Monday for $40-$50 million. The deal has yet to be announced to the public but the finalization was made on paper on Monday.

Representatives of Twitter weren’t available for a comment but the PR account tweeted:

For all those who might be curious, we continue to not comment on rumors.

In the past, Twitter has bought other third-party applications such as Tweetie and partnered with the photo add-on TwitPic when it launched its new interface.

Logitech Announces Keyboards, Mice, and Speakers for Tablets

With the iPad growing daily, Logitech decided that just carrying around your tablet is no longer good enough. Even though the iPad is very portable, so are these items. Logitech has announced a keyboard, mouse, and speakers that will work with the iPad or the Android tablets all through Bluetooth.

First matter of business is the keyboard. We already know the iPad has keyboards that work with it via Bluetooth, even from Apple, but does it have a stand? Logitech launched a keyboard that also features as a protective case that doubles as a stand for the tablet when you’re typing away. This case will allow you to put your device in landscape or portrait mode. This is all up to your personal preference. Starting at just $69.99 in May, who would say no to this amazing accessory for your tablet!

Logitech has a Wireless Speaker with a model number at z515 for $99.99 with a release date of June. While this may seem expensive for just a speaker, it may actually come in handy if you don’t like the stock sound of the iPads “dinky” speakers. This speaker system has a huge operating distance of potentially 50 feet. This will obviously depend on the conditions of where you are trying to use it. If you want to keep your iPad hooked up to the speakers but go into the other room and check email and keep the speakers going, you will be able to do so! (in theory)

The last of the new tablet related items will be a mouse. This has me thinking of how this will be functional to a tablet. Even though you may be more familiar with the original functionality of a mouse, how will this come into play with the touch screen interface? It certainly has me thinking, a lot! Do you honestly think it’s worth to shell out $49.99 for a mouse that you may never use for your TOUCH SCREEN device?

Even though these new accessories seem great, they will make your tablet less portable. Isn’t that the reason you purchased the tablet, for the portability? Is it truly worth giving up the portability for slightly quicker typing speeds and a more original feeling with a mouse? Why not just purchase a desktop computer if this is the case. I can understand the speakers as you can leave them in one room or on your desk as you walk around.

What do you think about these new accessories by Logitech? If you own a tablet, will you be interested in purchasing any of these? Leave your thoughts in the comment section.

Microsoft Acquires Skype

Yet again, another Skype post!  This morning, Microsoft announced that it will be acquiring Skype, the worlds leading VoIP client, for $8.5 Billion!  This will make a completely new business division within Microsoft.  Along side of this, the current CEO of Skype, Tony Bates, will become the president of the new division.

Microsoft issued a huge statement this morning, in which it indicated that it will “support Microsoft devices like Xbox and Kinect, Windows Phone and a wide array of Windows devices, and Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities. Microsoft will continue to invest in and support Skype clients on non-Microsoft platforms.”
What are you immediate thoughts about Microsoft buying Skype?  Do you think the VoIP Client, Skype, will improve?  What changes do you think we will see, if any?  Leave your thoughts in the comment section.

Skype Security Flaw Fixed for Mac

Skype is the worlds leading VOIP software for Mac and Windows.  You probably have heard by now that Skype has had a major security flaw for the Mac.  This particular flaw has been around for approximately a month but it has only now come to the attention of the public eye.

With all the staff members on the Skype Team, they have finally released an update for Mac to your Skype Client.  If you did not receive a notification to update automatically, you may have to update manually.  According to other Tech Blogs, you will need to download Skype 5.1 and reinstall it from the .dmg file.
This update has been available since April 14 but for what ever reason, the Skype Team is just now pushing it out.  The update includes the fix for the security flaw and a few bug fixes for the client.  If you haven’t downloaded the new update, now is your chance to do so, so you aren’t at risk anymore!

Google Talk Enables Video Chat on Android Devices

Google has recently launched their “Google Talk” to Android phones.  Now, why on earth is this such a big deal?  Well, Google Talk lets you have the ability to have voice conversations and now video conversations!  This is Androids way of having Facetime, which is also free.  The great thing about this is that these calls can be made over 3G, 4G, and even Wi-Fi connections.  You have no limitations when it comes to service!

According to Google, the new features will begin to roll out to the Nexus S phones over the next few weeks as a part of the Android 2.3.4 over-the-air update.  Not very far in the future will the video and voice chat be launched on other Android 2.3 devices.

If you have an Android Cell Phone, are you happy that you will be getting this update?  What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of having this?  Sound off your comments, below!

Twitter looks to purchase TweetDeck

Twitter executives are trying their all time best to broaden the appeal of the popular networking site through a number of ways.  According to The Wall Street Journal, Twitter is now looking to purchase TweetDeck, a widely-used cross-platform Twitter client, for a whopping $50 million!

Neither Twitter nor TweetDeck representatives were available to verify the possible purchase.  Although, very familiar sources have said that Twitter is taking another step toward controlling the very popular application.

TweetDeck has approximately fifteen full-time and contracted employees.  Most of these employees are based in the United Kingdom.  If Twitter buys TweetDeck, it won’t be such a huge deal.  Twitter has acquired Tweetie last year, which was just another step forward.  Purchasing TweetDeck will be just another step forward.

The bottom line is this, Twitter is looking to purchase TweetDeck.  What do you believe should happen?  Would you like to see Twitter purchase this “ever so popular” client?  Would you rather see Twitter shift to a model akin to Facebook?  Let me know in the comment section below.
