Starbucks Now Offering Free iPhone Apps

Chances are you go to Starbucks because you love coffee and you love spending too much on coffee.  Now, what if you go to Starbucks in hopes to land a great deal on an Application for your iOS device?  Starbucks is now offering free iPhone Apps with our purchases!

When you buy an order at Starbucks, they will be giving you a gift card for a free app in the app store.  The application that you will be receiving will vary from $.99 to who knows what.  The good thing is, you don’t have to pay for that application, hence the FREE part.  Starbucks has been offering free songs from iTunes since 2007 but the apps appear to be something new.  A representative could not be reached for a comment/interview.

The first application that was recorded and offered was an app called Shazam Encore.  This application is a music-identifying app and it sells for $5.99 in the app store on iTunes.  Will you be going to Starbucks more often in hopes to get a good application?  Leave your thoughts in the comment section.

TechJohnson’s Services

Published by on August 16th, 2011 | Comments Off

In an effort to jump start my freelance career and build my portfolio, I am offering cheap services to everyone.  With the economy being in a low state and me still having to pay bills, I hope this will help me out financially and let me provide for my family.  If you don’t need any of the services listed below, please pass it on to someone who might need them.

Web Design

Doing web design is my life long goal and this is what I wish to do as my career.  In order to do this, I need to build a portfolio of sites in which I have designed.  Most designers charge a huge starting fee and maintaining fee and this is where I will have the leading edge.

I specialize in creating blog type websites with the use of WordPress.  The site doesn’t have to be a blog, this is just what I specialize in.  I can build sites for blogging through portfolio.  Anything you wish to have, I can build it through WordPress.

Pricing for Web Design

My initial build price will start off at $400 and will vary in price depending on what you need done to the site.  If you want me to maintain the website on a monthly basis, that will cost you $200 a month.

Video

Video is another big passion of mine.  I have been shooting video for the past few years and editing video on a professional level for the past two years.  If you would like me to shoot a video for you and edit it (if you are local to NJ) then this is possible for a cheap cost.  If you would like me to create a video of me on camera in my home and edit it for your own use, this will also be a cheap solution.

Pricing

It will cost you $50 per video if I create a video of myself talking and editing.  You just need to give me the topic.  If you want me to come to a certain location for your video purposes in NJ, it will cost you $150 per video.  This includes editing as well.

Blogging

Since I’ve been blogging for several years on my own and gaining experience and knowledge, I’m finally read to start blogging and creating articles for other websites/companies.

Pricing

If you would like to use any of my current articles to cross blog or use on a different location, it will be $2 a blog.

If you would like me to create a whole new article for you, it will start out at $25 for 300 words.  Prices will obviously go up depending on the article length.

Facebook

What exactly do you mean, Facebook?  Well, have you ever gone to like a Facebook Fan Page and they had a landing page and though, wouldn’t that be cool to have on mine but didn’t know how to do it?  Well, now with my cheap rates, you don’t have to worry about it.  I am charging $50 per landing page!  That’s very cheap and I will even do a very basic design if you are completely clueless :)

Trombone

The last thing I offer is trombone.  This will obviously have to be a local thing but it’s something that I love to do and have been doing for 10 years now.  I am trying to get my name out there for Freelance Trombone playing.  If you ever need a trombone player, just send me an email at steve@techjohnson.com.  Also, I’m not certified but I’m willing to try and help tech trombone players.  You may also give me an email for that.

How to contact?

If you would like any of these services, please send Steven an email at steve@techjohnson.com.  He is ALWAYS looking for work and ways to provide for his family.

Tour of a Geeks iPod: Summer 2011

I stole this idea from David Di Franco when he did a “Tour of a Geeks iPad”. You can find this video at the following link: http://tinyurl.com/3fslack

Instead of completely stealing his idea with the iPad, I’ll start it up with my iPod Touch. The main reason is because I don’t own an iPad, yet :(

I hope to do this every season so expect more videos like this. Enjoy the video and if you have any questions about an application, don’t hesitate to ask!

Steve Jobs Biography set for November 21

Who exactly is Steve Jobs? Steve Jobs is the CEO of the high and mighty company called Apple. (AKA Macintosh) For a long time now, there has been rumors of a biography of Steve Jobs and now it all seems to be coming sooner rather than later.

According to Barnes and Noble’s website, the official Steve Jobs biography will be available on November 21, 2011. This biography will be titled “Steve Jobs: A Biography”. Before this release date, there were rumors of the book being released on March 6, 2012. Since it’s being released on November 21, 2011, this is a HUGE stepping point in terms of the release date.

This book isn’t the longest book in world at only 448 pages but it is based on over 40 interviews. Not only is it with just Steve Jobs and someone else, it has interviews with his family and friends. This biography was approved by Steve Jobs but he had no control over the contents. Very interesting. The Apple CEO had this to say about the biography:

I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of, such as getting my girlfriend pregnant when I was 23 and the way I handled that, he said. But I don’t have any skeletons in my closet that can’t be allowed out.

Below you will be able to find the full description of the biography.

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues this book chronicles the rollercoaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

It is also a book about innovation. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the 21st century was to connect creativity with technology, so he built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off limits and instead encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly even foes, former girlfriends, and colleagues he had once fired or infuriated. “I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of, such as getting my girlfriend pregnant when I was 23 and the way I handled that,” he said. “But I don’t have any skeletons in my closet that can’t be allowed out.”
Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. Likewise, his friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

He was not a model boss or human being, tidily packaged for emulation. Driven by demons, he could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is thus both instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

What do you think about this? Will you be purchasing the biography of Steve Jobs? Leave your comments below.

Vlog: Philly

This weekend was nothing special. I went to my friend Tom’s house which I didn’t get any footage off. Sorry about that. Saturday we went to Philly which I got like a second of footage. All in all, this weekend video was boring but some footage is better then no footage. Enjoy!

How to beat writers block

If you are a blogger, then chances are that you have encountered writers block.  Writers block is very common for an active blogger.  Some people encounter this more often than others.  My hope of this article is to make you better aware of what writers block is and how to overcome it.

What is writers block?

To simply put it, writers block is when you don’t know what to blog about.  Not only is it that you don’t know what to blog about, it could mean that you’re stuck on how to start a blog post.  You may have the focus point but don’t know how to dive into the actual article.

I have a focus point but I don’t know how to start the article

This is very common and even I have this problem.  Don’t stress too much because this is very beatable.  The best thing that I have ever done to start an article I didn’t know how was to ask a question.  If you start an article with a question then you will naturally start to answer the question in the next sentence.  From that point forward you will start to write and you won’t even realize that you’re thinking.  This has helped for many bloggers.  Give it a try, it won’t hurt!

What do I do if I have nothing to write about?

To ask that question in a more simple fashion, how do I beat writers block?  This is where this article will become a bit more detailed and you may want to take some notes.  Writers block is very common but it’s beatable.

  • Watch a film

This may sound crazy but it actually works.  Whether that movie sad, humorous, horror, or romantic, many writers are stimulated and inspired by visually seeing things.  A film can include a movie, a TV show, a commercial, even a YouTube video.  You may be inspired by something you see visually.

  • Take a nap

If you can’t wrap your mind around a topic to blog about, go take a nap.  Lack of sleep will make your common motor skills be lackluster which will cause lack of concentration.  By taking a nap, you release tension and give your body rest which will make you concentrate and focus at a higher level.  This will cause you to create a top notch article about something you want to write about.

  • Physical Activity

This one may sound awkward but it’s the truth.  By getting physical exercise, you are reducing your stress level.  This will also help you to focus more.  Yes, it contradicts what I said by taking a nap but each person is different.  Physical Activity can be taking a walk, going for a jog, or even working out at the gym.  The end decision is for you to make on what you wish to do as physical activity.

  • Take a break

Chances are you don’t have to be writing at that given second.  Take a break and simply walk away for a few.  Only you can determine the length of time to take a break but it may be best to take a few hours to even a day.  You may need to distance yourself from your article so you can come back with a fresh mindset and perspective.

  • Different Expression

Let me clarify exactly what I mean here.  If you typically use your computer as a means for creating your article, try switching to pen and paper.  This may give you the time between sentences to think more clearly because chances are, you type faster than you brain can think!  I know I have this issue.

These are just five ways that I believe you can beat writers block.  I know that there are a few other ways that you can beat it, but you have to know that every person is different.  No two people are alike and because of this, we all will beat writers block a bit differently.

Since writers block is very common, I have to ask you, how do you overcome it?  Please leave your comments and any other suggestions you may have for other writers.

I am no longer a Gizmodo reader!

Yup, as the title says, I am no longer a Gizmodo reader and I completely will live up to saying this.  This post will be a bit harsh but it needs to be put out there because of what Casey Chan (writer on Gizmodo) did to a 15 year-old boy.

I’ll keep the story line short.  Casey Chan made a 15 year-old app developer cry.  If you want to read the full story, feel free.  The fact of the matter is, what Casey Chan did was completely out of order and very unprofessional.  He calls himself a professional app developer so why would he make a potential app developer cry.  Not only did he make this young man cry, he probably killed all the passion he had in the tech world and has no desire to do anything anymore.  Way to go, scum bag.  Yes, if you couldn’t tell, I’m angry.

It’s also pretty ironic that his name is Casey, who didn’t see this one coming?

Anyway, to the young man who was creating an App, I would be glad to do anything in my will power to help you succeed in your ranks and review it.  I want you to live out your dreams and I don’t want some low life blog take you down.

Since Gizmodo’s Casey Chan has done this, I am no longer a daily reader.  I know I’m not the only one in this situation.  There will probably be hundreds of people who will no longer be reading your site.  I will also do everything in my will power to make sure that people don’t read your blog.  I think what you did was completely outrageous and unprofessional.  I highly believe that you need to give this kid a HUGE apology and even a reward.  What that rewards is, I don’t know.  Your company is “smart” so figure out the reward on your own.  I’m not going to baby you with my input.

I really hope Gizmodo reads this because I will not stand for this on the internet.  Especially for someone at such a young age who had a passion for developing.

I will make a stand with you, Gizmodo.  If you would like me to take down this post, you need to send me $500.  If you would like me to take down this post and come back to reading your blog faithfully, you need to send me $1,000.

The longer this post stays up, the more I will try to get people to stop reading your blog.  What you did was wrong and like I have mentioned, I will NOT stand for this.

As of right now, good day to you Gizmodo, hello Mashable!

Update:  To everyone that thinks I am serious about the money thing, grow a pair of balls and bitch off.  Seriously, do you think I was honestly serious about obtaining money from Gizmodo?  Absolutely not!  If I actually did get the money, how do you know that I wouldn’t give it to the boy in hopes to get his spirit back for developing?  It’s called freedom of speech and I can say what I wish at my own will.  Believe it or not, so can you and Casey!  I’m just proving a point and sticking up for what I believe in.  Call me what you will, it’s not making me lose any sleep!

Tech Update

Congratulations to David Di Franco for being my first “official” advertiser!

http://daviddifran.co

In the future there will be more unboxings, reviews, application reviews, and tech news. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to share them at steve@techjohnson.com

Please continue to give support for the individuals in the UK area with all the rioting that has been going on.

Angry Birds Apparel for a Baby

I’m writing this post for a number of reasons and the main reason is because I have a child on the way and I love Angry Birds.  It’s probably the most addicting game that I own on my iOS Device.  Even the tiniest of humans can get in on the Angry Brids craze.  I’m so happy that I came across this on Mashable.

I’m so glad that I will be able to outfit my son with Angry Birds attire.  Apparel ranges from bibs, changing pads, to even clothes.  Yes, Rivio has teamed up with baby product maker SwaddleDesigns.  Probably the most amazing thing, ever!  You better believe that I will be purchasing an Angry Birds product for my son when he is born in December.

UK Riot News

This is a video for the warm hearted folks in hopes to spread the awareness of what is going on in the UK at this point in time. There is a lot of riots in the UK because a lot of people aren’t able to get a job and other things. It all started (from knowledge) when a police officer shot someone. People are killing people for no reason and they are burning down houses and big buildings.

Please help spread the awareness so this all stops. I have opened up a donation to send over to the UK to help rebuild buildings that were burnt down. Even a penny will help! Please do everything you can. If your finances aren’t there to help and support, please pass this video a long and pray for the families and people over in the UK at this time.

From the picture below, you can see just one of the many buildings that have been burnt to the ground.

Maine: The Final Days

Maine was an all-in-all great experience and it has always been that way for the past several years.  I was in Maine for 5 days and they have been the highlight of my year to this day.  God worked a lot of his glory into my heart and made me realize a lot of things.  It also made me realize that I need to start to follow in his path again because I was slipping away.  God is a huge focus point in my life and I will never let him completely leave me life.

I know this blog is mainly for tech, but keep in mind that it’s my “personal” blog so you will get “personal” stuff as well.  With that being said, I’ll fill you all in on my last two days in Maine.

On the 4th day, I woke up like every other day.  After all the meetings and such were complete, I went to the beach to spend the afternoon there.  Boy was it cold!  After the beach, I went to…I can’t remember!  All I remember is that the last full day was very boring!

On the last day, Friday, I woke up earlier then normal to pack the car with all my belongings.  After packing the car, I went to breakfast to put on a feast!  They had so much bacon and pancakes with syrup, it was a wrap!  The only bad thing was that I spilt syrup on my pants :/.  That probably made my day horrible because they were the only clean pants I had left and I had to travel a long car ride home.  Oh well, God will always provide.

After breakfast, we did our meetings and then it was time to set on my journey home.  For the first hour or so of the trip, I fell asleep and don’t remember anything.  Next thing I knew, we were getting gas and eating Wendy’s.  I had a lot of Wendy’s during this trip.  I think it’s time to get back to eating “semi” healthy again.  After eating Wendy’s, we were back on the road and I fell asleep again.  I wasn’t completely in a deep dark sleep, I just kept dozing off.  Next thing I knew, we were sitting in horrible traffic which lasted over an hour.  A ride that should have taken us 5 1/2 hours took us nearly8.  It was upsetting but at least I got home in one piece.

God ran through my heart this past week in Maine and I hope you all could have felt this.  Now that I’m home for quite some time, I’ll be back into my technology blogs.  Don’t worry, things will be back to normal :) .

I hope you all enjoyed my “day-by-day” blogs while I was away in Maine.  The only thing special that happened was God.  God works wonders!

Maine: Day 3

Sorry for this posting being a few hours late.  It was a late night and I needed some rest.  If I didn’t rest, I would have been sleeping during all the meetings!  That’s never a good thing, especially if you are interning and want to set the right example.

Just like every other day I woke up and took my shower to get ready.  This morning was a bit rough because I over slept by ten to fifteen minutes and my stomach was having issues.  To say the least, I was 15 minutes late to the building that I’m “mainly” interning at.  It wasn’t a big deal, I just HATE to be late to things.  It’s not how I was raised nor does it feel right.  It always makes me feel awful and makes it feel like people are talking about me behind my back.  That’s never good…

Today was like no other morning, went through all the meetings with no problems.  After the meetings is where the fun begins

I went over to someone house that they are renting for the afternoon.  While I was there, I had to make a phone call to the unemployment office in Neptune, NJ.  Can you believe that I was on hold for about 40 minutes only to be on the phone with an actually person for under a minute.  That was just crazy.  The good news about waiting for this phone call, I still have no idea if I’m going to be accepted or denied.  I find it all out on Monday.  Please pray that this will fall through.

After spending an hour of my day on the phone with a machine, I got the chance to head down to the beach for some Maine Beach fun.  Believe it or not, Maine can get hot, but the water is cold.  Just going to give you all a heads up.  I went to Old Orchard Beach to go swimming and play from ball on the sand.  It was a good time and you can never go wrong with the beach up here.  It’s more difficult to get burnt, but I assure you, it’s possible so be safe!

Beach play was over and now it’s dinner.  Dinner is always my favorite part of the day.  Yes, I love food so I get excited.  I had Cincinnati Chili for the first time and I completely fell in love.  If you never had it, I would HIGHLY recommend it!  It’s just beyond amazing and I want more just thinking about it.  Maybe I’ll switch topics now…

After dinner I went down to the Pavilion in Old Orchard Beach (OOB) to watch Sandi Patty.  She’s a great singer with some amazingly high vocal cords.  Oh, I forgot to mention that her stage presents is also great.  She puts a smile on everyone’s face and she’s hilarious.  Great concert!

Now it’s time to go to the Pier where I bought some Bill’s Pizza and Pier Fries.  They are right next to each other and I think they are the best places to eat in that area.  If you’re in OOB, go there if you want fries and pizza.  It’s a bit pricey but not overly expensive.  For desert I had Dairy Queen.  I bought the Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard…amazing!

Now it’s time to head back to my room where my fail of the day happened.  My key decided to get scratched up at the beach so it didn’t work.  After a long time waiting for assistance, I got into my room and slept the night away.  Goodnight and I’ll fill you all in on things tomorrow.

Maine: Day 2

Before I get started, I just want to let you all know that sleeping with no AC is a killer.  I probably woke up about 4 times throughout the night.  This wouldn’t have been so bad if I didn’t go to bed so late and had to wake up so early.  I think I woke up this morning in a pile of water because of my sweaty self.  Probably one of the most disgusting things I have ever waken up to.

Now that’s it’s Tuesday and my first full day in Maine is complete, let’s talk about it!  It was certainly busy with a lot of meetings and tech work.  I’m in Maine to be a Tech Intern with the Salvation Army.  As you are well aware, Technology is my passion so what an opportunity this is.  Technology and the Lord, nothing could be better!

Breakfast was at 7:30am but I opted to skip out.  I have never been much of a breakfast eater so why start in a location that I’m not very familiar with?  It just seems odd!  I did have a bottle of water though.

Before long, it was time to get ready for meetings and such.  My first acts of duty was the run the power point for morning worship and set up some future power points for meetings to come.  I also had to set up some stations so staff members computers would work on the projectors.  I must say, it’s an interesting set up they have going on up here.  Nothing standard, pretty low in my mind.

The meetings were touching and I could definitely feel the Holy Spirit was present.  The Lord is and will be the only person that I truly “follow” with all my heart.  I believe in the Lord and trust him with everything I can put on the table.  I would seriously lay my life down for Jesus Christ and God.  If you didn’t know that about me, now you do.  You learn something new everyday!  Isn’t that true…

The meetings have ended and it’s time…time to relax!  I ended up going to L.L. Bean in Portland, Maine to go shopping and bought two things.  I bought some coffee because I was sleepy and I bought my girlfriend a present which I’m hoping she loves.  I know she will love it, it’s from me :) .  I’m not going to say what it is because I know she will probably read this post and I want her to be surprised.  Sorry Alyssa, I love you!

Shopping has ended and now it’s time for the evening program.  It wasn’t anything special but I was apart of the scripture reading.  That’s never a dull moment!  After that was over, I went out for the evening again with some friends and this time the night was a bit more enjoyable.

From the meeting, a group of us went to an indoor go kart place.  It was so fun and it was a LEGAL race.  I don’t get to race LEGALLY that often so I jump at the chance.  It was a bit pricey at $23 but it was worth it to me…extremely fun!  I came in second place with the second fastest lap time as well.  I’m proud!

After racing, I went back to a friends house to play some Xbox…guess what we played, a racing/drifting game!  I really miss my Xbox.  Maybe I’ll get some donations so I could purchase one and play some games and do some reviews.  Wouldn’t that be exciting!  After leaving my friends house, we stopped at McDonald’s so I could eat dinner.  I really need to stop eating fast food before I start to gain all my weight back.  I’ve been doing so good!

From go karts to food, I’m now sleepy and laying in bed about to fall asleep.  This was day two and I hope you guys come back to ready day three tomorrow!  Sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite!

Maine: Day 1

Hey everyone, if you aren’t aware, I am currently in Maine.  I’ll be doing a daily blog (hopefully) about how each of my days have gone.  I’m sad to say that I didn’t bring my camera so there won’t be any types of filming.  I am posting pictures on Twitter everyone once and awhile so make sure you click the Twitter icon to the right of the page to follow and see some cool pictures of the convention that I’m at.  Let me get started with my first day which includes travel and Maine!

The first thing that I did like everyone else on this planet was wake up!  I slept at my mothers house, the night before so I would be closer to my location.  I woke up at 6:30am to shower and finish packing my body wash and such.  Before long, I was on the road to Maine, USA.

On the journey up, I stopped at a few rest stops to get some gas and snacks.  The main stop was Wendy’s and let me tell you something, I ate like a champion.  I bought the double Baconator with a large fry and large soda.  Definitely hit the spot!

From Wendy’s, I did a direct shot to finish out the trip to Maine.  Once I arrived in Maine, there was a little confusion as to where I would be staying.  I ended up getting a room in a dorm at the University of Northern New England (UNE).  It’s in Biddeford, Maine…interesting town!

Yes, the rooms are nice but there is no AC.  I have been sweating my behind off but I’ll be ok.  People would be lucky to have a room like this so I can’t complain to much.  We have turned into people of greediness and that’s not Christian like.  We should be grateful for what we can have and own.  I can suffer with no AC for a few days.  It’s not the end of the universe.

Anyway, after successfully checking into my room, I ended up going to a main event in Old Orchard Beach Pavilion.  A great corps band played an amazing concert.  It’s amazing that they were from California.  If you know much about the Salvation Army, you will know that the Western Territory doesn’t have a Staff Band.  To have a corps band at such a high talent level is beyond my imagination.  I think it’s amazing!  Just think of how great they would be if they had a Staff Band for people to feed off of.

After the meeting was over, I headed down to the Pier to hang out with some friends and get some Pier Fries.  If you haven’t been to OOB to witness some Pier Fries, take the trip.  You’ll thank me later!

After hanging out and playing a few arcade games, it was time to head back to the dreaded room without AC.  Sorry, I’ll stop complaining about this now…like I said, we should be grateful!

Now that I’m in my room, I watched a show on Netflix and did some texting before heading to sleep around 1:30am.  Maybe tomorrow evening, I won’t go to sleep so late.  I have to wake up at 7am all week.  Going to bed at such a late hour is probably not the brightest ideas!

This was day one of my trip to Maine.  Come back tomorrow to read what I have to say about day two!

Vlog: Woogi Boogi

Sorry about being a day late with writing this weekend video post. I have been traveling to Maine and this is the first chance that I have gotten to upload! I hope you enjoy!

This weekend was actually pretty good. I went to my friends house and spent the night. I guess the rest you can watch to see what truly happened. All I can say is that I got sun burnt really badly.

If you can guess what the “Woogi Boogi” is from at the end of the movie, I’ll leave you a comment :)
