Calm Before the Storm

Friday went well and my job interview was great. I just have a lot to think about. However, he did offer me the job position. If you are unemployed in NJ, don’t bother to try and collect. Do your best to find a new job. Preparing for Hurricane Irene is hectic. Everyone was going crazy but we all expect this storm to be huge.

Someone please answer Alyssa’s crazy question

Irene Prep!

Actual photo of Hurricane Irene from space off the coast of Florida

Hurricanes have never been a huge threat to the Garden State.  The Garden State is what some people call New Jersey.  If you aren’t aware, a pretty large hurricane is gaining way to New Jersey (NJ).  Since NJ isn’t big with hurricanes, people are freaking out, including myself.

Pretty much the whole state is under a Hurricane Warning/Watch.  They expect this storm to be pretty large, if not the largest Hurricane to ever hit NJ.  There are so many towns that are being evacuated by law.  If people decide to ride out the storm and call in to be rescued, the state will actually say sorry.  The National Guard is even on stand by for some of the coastal towns.  My town is considered to be a Coastal Town and they expect to get a lot of flooding and damaging winds.  Winds are expected to be 80+ mph.  That’s pretty bad!

On top of the damaging winds, they are expecting that most of NJ will be out of power.  Due to this, we had to go grocery shopping to stock up on some food so we don’t run out.  Mainly food that can’t go back and that doesn’t need to be kept in the fridge/freezer.  We bought a lot of soup, bread, and peanut butter.  The soup can be made on our stove because it’s gas.  The gas will still work if we don’t have power.  That’s always a good thing.

The state has advised people to fill their car tanks up on gas so people don’t run out.  I didn’t understand why filling your tank was so crucial until I thought about it.  Think about it closely, if a bad hurricane hits, the gas stations won’t be able to get THEIR tanks filled back up because the tankers won’t be able to get there.  Since gas stations won’t have gas, you will pretty much be SCREWED if you ran out.  Believe it or not, it’s very smart to fill your tank.  I did just this!

Now it’s time to sit back and watch the hurricane strike.  The strongest points of the hurricane will be between 8pm on Saturday – 2pm Sunday.  Do the math, that’s a HUGE time for a hurricane to be in action.  The storm is on a slow path but a very deadly path.

If you are in the path of this Hurricane like I am, please be safe and stay indoors.  Going outside wouldn’t be the smartest idea.  I’m pretty sure I’ll go against what I just said to get some film, but I’m not the brightest bulb in the pack.

Please pray that there will be no fatalities and there won’t be too much damage.  Mother Nature can be devastating and people don’t realize how strong these can be.  Stay safe!!

Lotion Gone Crazy

Hopefully this vlog title gets your imagination going. It’s not what you think, I swear!

Too Much Power!

Sometimes, days can be boring and when you think they are fun, they aren’t. Check out yesterdays vlog.

At the car meet, a younger kid had a Silver RSX which he recently bought. A few days ago, he just put in a new exhaust, headers, and some other light mods. About half way through the meet, he went to go race someone and crashed his car. From what I was told, he hit the curb going 105mph and completely lost control of the car. He wrapped it around the pole but to everyone’s surprise, he is completely fine. He has some injuries, but he will make it. Everyone please pray for him and his car. You can replace a car but you can’t replace a life.

Enjoy the video!

Earthquake!

Today was a very interesting day. New Jersey had an earthquake! This is something that you don’t feel everyday! First it was a bad winter, then flooding, now an Earthquake, next a huge hurricane…what’s happening! 2012?

Wax on, Wax off

I never got much footage of my day, but some footage is better then no footage! Today was a good day but a boring one. We went to the Apple Store for a short while and I’m happy that I didn’t go in debt. The day basically consisted of me waxing my car and attempting to start a business! More details to come tomorrow!

Sittin’ on a toilet

I bet you can’t sit on a toilet like I do!

Retweet & Sexting Are Now Words in the Oxford English Dictionary

This has got to be one of the most interesting topics that I have seen in quite some time. The Oxford English Diction has added a plethora of 400 new words. Included in this new update are the words retweet, woot, sexting and cyberbullying. I could honest have seen cyberbullying to have been one of the words because I personally thought it was already a word, I guess I was wrong. The other three just simply amaze me.

The 12th edition of the dictionary just proves to all of us that technology and social media have greatly impacted the English Language. Winning this new update has got to be the word ‘retweet’. Who would have ever thought this word would make it to the dictionary in such a short amount of time. Retweet is the act of resharing a message on Twitter. Sexting and woot were bound to be a part of the dictionary at one point or another.

Are you a dictionary user? Are there words that you wish to see in the dictionary that just aren’t there yet? If so, please leave them in the comment section below and explain why you think they should be in the dictionary.

Starbucks Now Offering Free iPhone Apps

Chances are you go to Starbucks because you love coffee and you love spending too much on coffee.  Now, what if you go to Starbucks in hopes to land a great deal on an Application for your iOS device?  Starbucks is now offering free iPhone Apps with our purchases!

When you buy an order at Starbucks, they will be giving you a gift card for a free app in the app store.  The application that you will be receiving will vary from $.99 to who knows what.  The good thing is, you don’t have to pay for that application, hence the FREE part.  Starbucks has been offering free songs from iTunes since 2007 but the apps appear to be something new.  A representative could not be reached for a comment/interview.

The first application that was recorded and offered was an app called Shazam Encore.  This application is a music-identifying app and it sells for $5.99 in the app store on iTunes.  Will you be going to Starbucks more often in hopes to get a good application?  Leave your thoughts in the comment section.

TechJohnson’s Services

Published by on August 16th, 2011 | Comments Off

In an effort to jump start my freelance career and build my portfolio, I am offering cheap services to everyone.  With the economy being in a low state and me still having to pay bills, I hope this will help me out financially and let me provide for my family.  If you don’t need any of the services listed below, please pass it on to someone who might need them.

Web Design

Doing web design is my life long goal and this is what I wish to do as my career.  In order to do this, I need to build a portfolio of sites in which I have designed.  Most designers charge a huge starting fee and maintaining fee and this is where I will have the leading edge.

I specialize in creating blog type websites with the use of WordPress.  The site doesn’t have to be a blog, this is just what I specialize in.  I can build sites for blogging through portfolio.  Anything you wish to have, I can build it through WordPress.

Pricing for Web Design

My initial build price will start off at $400 and will vary in price depending on what you need done to the site.  If you want me to maintain the website on a monthly basis, that will cost you $200 a month.

Video

Video is another big passion of mine.  I have been shooting video for the past few years and editing video on a professional level for the past two years.  If you would like me to shoot a video for you and edit it (if you are local to NJ) then this is possible for a cheap cost.  If you would like me to create a video of me on camera in my home and edit it for your own use, this will also be a cheap solution.

Pricing

It will cost you $50 per video if I create a video of myself talking and editing.  You just need to give me the topic.  If you want me to come to a certain location for your video purposes in NJ, it will cost you $150 per video.  This includes editing as well.

Blogging

Since I’ve been blogging for several years on my own and gaining experience and knowledge, I’m finally read to start blogging and creating articles for other websites/companies.

Pricing

If you would like to use any of my current articles to cross blog or use on a different location, it will be $2 a blog.

If you would like me to create a whole new article for you, it will start out at $25 for 300 words.  Prices will obviously go up depending on the article length.

Facebook

What exactly do you mean, Facebook?  Well, have you ever gone to like a Facebook Fan Page and they had a landing page and though, wouldn’t that be cool to have on mine but didn’t know how to do it?  Well, now with my cheap rates, you don’t have to worry about it.  I am charging $50 per landing page!  That’s very cheap and I will even do a very basic design if you are completely clueless :)

Trombone

The last thing I offer is trombone.  This will obviously have to be a local thing but it’s something that I love to do and have been doing for 10 years now.  I am trying to get my name out there for Freelance Trombone playing.  If you ever need a trombone player, just send me an email at steve@techjohnson.com.  Also, I’m not certified but I’m willing to try and help tech trombone players.  You may also give me an email for that.

How to contact?

If you would like any of these services, please send Steven an email at steve@techjohnson.com.  He is ALWAYS looking for work and ways to provide for his family.

Tour of a Geeks iPod: Summer 2011

I stole this idea from David Di Franco when he did a “Tour of a Geeks iPad”. You can find this video at the following link: http://tinyurl.com/3fslack

Instead of completely stealing his idea with the iPad, I’ll start it up with my iPod Touch. The main reason is because I don’t own an iPad, yet :(

I hope to do this every season so expect more videos like this. Enjoy the video and if you have any questions about an application, don’t hesitate to ask!

Steve Jobs Biography set for November 21

Who exactly is Steve Jobs? Steve Jobs is the CEO of the high and mighty company called Apple. (AKA Macintosh) For a long time now, there has been rumors of a biography of Steve Jobs and now it all seems to be coming sooner rather than later.

According to Barnes and Noble’s website, the official Steve Jobs biography will be available on November 21, 2011. This biography will be titled “Steve Jobs: A Biography”. Before this release date, there were rumors of the book being released on March 6, 2012. Since it’s being released on November 21, 2011, this is a HUGE stepping point in terms of the release date.

This book isn’t the longest book in world at only 448 pages but it is based on over 40 interviews. Not only is it with just Steve Jobs and someone else, it has interviews with his family and friends. This biography was approved by Steve Jobs but he had no control over the contents. Very interesting. The Apple CEO had this to say about the biography:

I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of, such as getting my girlfriend pregnant when I was 23 and the way I handled that, he said. But I don’t have any skeletons in my closet that can’t be allowed out.

Below you will be able to find the full description of the biography.

Based on more than forty interviews with Jobs conducted over two years as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues this book chronicles the rollercoaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

It is also a book about innovation. At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the 21st century was to connect creativity with technology, so he built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read it before it was published. He put nothing off limits and instead encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly even foes, former girlfriends, and colleagues he had once fired or infuriated. “I’ve done a lot of things I’m not proud of, such as getting my girlfriend pregnant when I was 23 and the way I handled that,” he said. “But I don’t have any skeletons in my closet that can’t be allowed out.”
Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. Likewise, his friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

He was not a model boss or human being, tidily packaged for emulation. Driven by demons, he could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple’s hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is thus both instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

What do you think about this? Will you be purchasing the biography of Steve Jobs? Leave your comments below.
